Frilly & Funkie Home For The Holidays

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog! This is the last challenge for the year.
This challenge is hosted by Kathy (Kathy by Design), who has chosen the theme HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS …KATHY says, “Let’s get ready to Deck the Halls by creating some home decor for the holiday season. You can make centerpieces, wreaths, banners, ornaments, wall hangings, or little vignettes …basically anything BUT a card for this challenge. If you don’t celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, then just make some home decor with a wintry theme.”
This final challenge theme is really fitting, as I will actually be going “home for the holidays!” With so much to do before we go, I decided to make some gift tags to adorn my gifts this year. Frilly & Funkie Bountiful Harvest

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!
This challenge is hosted by Nancy (Tattered Treasures), who has chosen the theme BOUNTIFUL HARVEST …NANCY says, “Create any vintage or shabby chic project celebrating the bounty of the season in the rich hues of Autumn.”
I confess that since moving I’ve suffered from a fair amount of creative block. I think the stress, exhaustion and mind overload has left me a little creatively flat. Even with this super challenge theme, I sat for the longest time and nothing happened, so I turned to Tim Holtz’s 12 Tags of 2016 for help. Tim guides you through the techniques and before I knew it, I was covered in ink, big smile on my face…
You can see this background technique over on Tim’s blog. I’d forgotten how much I love the remnant rub resist.
I used the Tim Holtz Alphanumeric thinlits dies to create “Thankful,” die cut from cork and laid over the top of textile surface. I created the little pumpkin ticket using the mini pumpkin stencil from set number 22 and applying a little spiced marmalade and peeled paint distress marker through the stencil with a water brush. I added a remnant rub to the bottom and blended in walnut stain distress ink. SO CUTE!

Festive Frame

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… I’m delighted and very humbled to be following the exceptional talents of Audrey Pettit and Emma Williams, to share a project that I’ve made for the holiday inspiration series over on Tim Holtz’s blog.
I wanted to make a home decor piece to display in my new home over the holiday season. I’m head over heals for this years Tim Holtz holiday products, many of which I used in my project, including the new gilded remnant rubs (YES I SAID GILDED)!!If you haven’t seen the new holiday products, they are HERE and HERE. Once these holiday hotcakes are gone, they’re gone, so get them while you can!

Frilly & Funkie What a ‘Mesh’!

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!
This challenge is hosted by Pamellia (My Little Craft Things), who has chosen the theme WHAT A ‘MESH’ …PAMELLIA says, “I would like you to create a vintage or shabby chic project using any type of mesh (crinoline, cheesecloth, tulle, burlap, canvas etc).”
This holiday card is so quick and easy to make. I used papers from the Tim Holtz tidings paper stash, as well as new Tim Holtz Sizzix holiday release dies.
Die cut a cameo frame with the movers and shapers oval insert from distress watercolor cardstock. Emboss with a texture fades folder and blend in vintage photo, walnut stain and ground espresso distress ink.
For the center of the frame I die cut a star from the new Tim Holtz Sizzix thinlits dimensional star set from metallic kraft core cardstock. I sanded over the top with a sanding grip and spritzed with gathered twig distress marker.
Using the same technique as with the cameo frame, I die cut “Believe” with the new Tim Holtz Sizzix thinlits holiday words thin set, underlaid with metallic kraft core cardstock and mounted over burlap.

A Very Vintage Halloween

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!
This time it’s my turn to host the challenge and I’ve chosen the theme A VERY VINTAGE HALLOWEEN… “It’s time to get your witches hats on and create a project in a vintage style with a Halloween theme.”
Halloween is probably my favourite “crafting holiday” of the year and it’s no secret that I have a small pumpkin and skull obsession! This year I haven’t had as much time to get my creepy on because of our move and all of the chaos that moving brings. With new walls to decorate, I decided to make a home decor piece to display until the Christmas decorations go up!
I picked up a RIBBA frame recently on one of my many visits to IKEA! I love these dimensional frames and thought it would be fun to add a few trinkets (or apothecary vials) in front of the background. I wanted to make use of the nice frame mount that comes with the frame, however, things did not go according to plan! All surfaces are not made equally and it really made me appreciate how well the mixed media and distress watercolor cardstocks hold inks and paints! The IKEA ribba frame mounts DO NOT! I added distress inks and water direct to the frame mount and it was an utter crafting disaster! So I got on my thinking cap and pulled out my tissue wrap!
I tapped the distress mixed media ink palette onto the ledger script stamp and then stamped directly onto the tissue wrap, turning the stamp each time to give a less unified background. I wrapped the tissue wrap around the frame and adhered with glue n seal. I swiped various distress inks onto a non stick craft mat, spritzed with water and pressed the tissue wrap covered frame mount into the ink, dried with a heat tool and then repeated several times until happy with the look.
I stamped my favourite skull stamp of all time onto mixed media cardstock, blended in some distress ink and coloured the teeth with white gel pen to make them pop. I adhered it with 3D foam over a mixed media cardstock background, stamped with a specks stamp and used a frayed burlap distress marker to create a shadow.
Using a pack of idea-ology apothecary vials I distressed the labels and filled with various embossing powders and dyed the cork stoppers with walnut stain distress ink. I adhered the vials to the inside of the IKEA ribba frame with glossy accents.
I added an idea-ology bone and spider to the tops of 2 of the vials and adhered cheese cloth dyed with antique linen distress ink. I stamped “Happy Halloween” down the side and attached some hanging spiders from a ring fastener.
I photographed the frame without the glass because of glare when photographing, but replaced the glass, (which sits in front of the vials), ready to hang on the wall or stand on a sideboard.Thanks for stopping by. It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!
This challenge is hosted by Suzz (Suzz’ Stamping Spot), who has chosen the theme AUTHOR AUTHOR …SUZZ says, “There are so many wonderful books that inspire the mind to imagine the worlds created within them. Think fairy tales, mysteries, romances or even science fiction and use that to inspire your art. Your challenge it so create a shabby chic or vintage styled project inspired by a book. Provide an explanation of how the book and author inspired your project.”
I am a bit of a William Shakespeare fan! My favourite plays are, (in no particular order), Romeo & Juliette, Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet! I chose Hamlet for my project as it’s set in the Kingdom of Denmark, which seemed poetic given my recent move. For those unfamiliar with Hamlet, you may have heard the famous line “something is rotten in the state of Denmark!”The inspiration for this particular card comes from Act 5, Scene 1 where the gravedigger hands the skull to Hamlet, he holds the skull up and says, “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. He hath borne me on his back a thousand times, and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it.”
I used the card packaging that comes with Tim Holtz idea-ology burlap panels. I cut 2 strips to create borders to give the card a book feel. The Tim Holtz Sizzix skull die was perfect for this project. I blended distress ink in, flicked with water and mounted over the mottled packaging background.
I created a custom stencil using the alphanumeric thinlits die set and mixed media cardstock, then blended fired brick and ground espresso distress ink through.
I used a the “smudgestampingstenciling” technique from one my other favourite books, “Compendium of Curiosities 3!” It gives the stenciled image a lovely worn look. Frilly & Funkie Going Round in Circles!

It’s Wednesday and time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!
This challenge is hosted by Sue (Stamping Sue Style), who has chosen the theme GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES …SUE says, “Including circles in my projects is one of my favourite things to do, so for this challenge I want to see circles, lots of circles, not just one! Stencilled, stamped or even a circular project such as a wreath!”
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I’ve been unpacking my craft stash into it’s new home. After a week of organizing, I was desperate to break open the lost zombie die that arrived last week.
I created a background by stamping the newsprint stamp in black soot archival ink onto mixed media cardstock. Then swiping various distress inks onto a non stick craft sheet and spritzing with water and pressing the mixed media cardstcok into the inks. Once completely dry I blended frayed burlap distress ink over the top to mute the base colours and grunge it up. I placed the ringer stencil over the top and brushed white picket fence distress paint through the stencil with the dauber end. I have converted to the flip tops for my distress paints, but have a second bottle of picket fence, black soot and evergreen bough with dauber tops. Finally, blend ground espresso distress ink through the mini skull stencil. This stencil is SO COOL!
The lost zombie was cut from Tim Holtz white substrate sheet, (I’m finally coming round to the fact that the new substrate is awesome. In my mind, it replaced grungeboard and grungepaper and in all honesty, I’ve been holding a bit of a grudge….)! The substrate took the distress ink really well and gave a very cool mottled effect, but the clothes looked too washed out against the background. I had finished the card and turned all the lights off to go to bed when I had an idea and turned all the lights back on and went back to my desk, (a little fun insight into my creative madness)! I die cut clothes for my lost zombie from the textile surfaces, frayed a little and then blended with ground espresso distress ink to make dirty.
I die cut “beware” from the new Sizzix halloween word thinlits die set from substrate and mounted over the top of a piece of filmstrip.
I wanted to include a circular embellishment to continue the challenge theme and this idea-ology adornment monocle seemed perfect. I snipped the loop off an adornment wicked spider with wire cutters and coloured the spiders back with a distress crayon. It amazes me what surfaces the distress crayons work with!

Frilly & Funkie Things With Wings

It’s time for another challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog! This challenge is hosted by Pamellia (My Little Craft Things), who has chosen the theme THINGS WITH WINGS, …Pamellia says, “I would like to see anything that has wings, use your imagination… just make sure your project is shabby chic or vintage in style.”
I love the current challenge over at Frilly and Funkie. It gave me the opportunity to take the new Tim Holtz Regions Beyond and Mini Halloween stamps for another spin! …crows have wings! 😉
I started with a background using a technique I saw this week on Bobbi Smith’s blog Vintage Muse Designs. On top of that I used the new Tim Holtz Twisted stencil from Stampers Anonymous with hickory smoke distress ink.
I created rooftops by stamping the haunted house from the Regions Beyond and Mini Halloween stamps sets which I fussy cut, blended with vintage photo distress ink and adhered along the bottom of my card. I added an incantation word band with picket fence distress crayon rubbed over the top and attached with a tiny attacher.
I glued the crows into place by the body, leaving the wing and tail slightly raised off the cardstock to give dimension. I don’t have a photo, but the background looked too plain so I added some renmant rubs from the new gothic set. I love the chaotic look it gives and one of the scribble rubs worked perfectly as smoke from the rooftop chimneys. Finally I used a splatter brush loaded with ground espresso distress ink to create splatter to the background.
