1. Haunted Banner

   With All Hallows’ Eve drawing near, I’m sharing this haunted banner that I made for the Tim Holtz Halloween inspiration series. You can follow along on Tim’s facebook and instagram with a weekly recap on Saturday on his blog.

   
   
   Here’s how I made the jack-o-lantern banner…

   
   Step 1: Cut a piece of black classic kraft stock 5 x 7 inches.
   Step 2: Cut a piece of paper from the Halloween mini stash 4.5 x 6.5 inches.
   Step 3: Cut a second piece of black classic kraft stock 4 x 6 inches.
   Step 4: Cut a piece of mixed media heavystock 3.5 x 5.5 inches.

   
   Step 5: Using the WRMK banner punch board, cut the ends to create a banner.
   Step 6: Sand the edges of the large black classic kraft stock banner with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 7: Distress the edge of the halloween mini stash paper banner and blend in vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 8: Sand the edges of the small black classic kraft stock banner with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink.

   
   Step 9: Ink up the ledger script stamp with hickory smoke distress archival ink. Stamp onto the heavystock banner using the stamp platform. Stamp a second time using a very light layer of vintage photo distress archival ink.
   Step 10: Blend in antique linen distress ink.
   Step 11: Blend in pumice stone distress ink.
   Step 12: Blend vintage photo distress ink into the edges.

   
   Step 13: Sew the edges of the mini stash and heavystock banners with black thread.
   Step 14: Gather the banner pieces ready to assemble.
   Step 15: Adhere using distress collage medium matte.
   Step 16: Punch 2 holes in the top of the assembled banner.

   
   Step 17: Die cut the jack-0-lantern thinlits die from a heavystock tag.
   Step 18: Blend tea dye, forest moss and brushed corduroy distress ink and splatter with a distress sprayer.
   Step 19: Once dry, spritz rusty hinge distress marker over the die cut with a distress marker spritzer.

   
   Step 20: Die cut Halloween, jack-o-lantern base and a cobweb from black classic kraft stock. Sand and blend in vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 21: Place the cobweb die cut over the banner and trim any overlap with mini scissors.
   Step 22: Adhere the cobweb with distress collage medium matte.
   Step 23: Add the halloween die cut with hex fasteners. Adhere the 31 die cut and add mini book rings to the holes at the top of the banner.

   
   Step 24: Add the jack-o-lantern die cut with adhesive black foam.

   
   Step 25: Die cut the witchcraft die from black classic kraft stock, sand with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink with a mini blending tool. Blend peeled paint distress ink onto the heavystock banner (top one), stamp a sentiment from the monstrous set and adhere the witch with distress collage medium matte.

   
   Step 26: Die cut the feather and raven die from black classic kraft stock, sand with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink with a mini blending tool. Blend weathered wood distress ink onto the heavystock banner (top one), stamp a sentiment from the monstrous set and adhere the ravens with distress collage medium matte.

   
   Step 27: Die cut the scarecrow die from black classic kraft stock, sand with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink with a mini blending tool. Blend wild honey distress ink onto the heavystock banner (top one), stamp a bat and 31 using the idea-ology cling foam stamps and adhere the scarecrow with distress collage medium matte, bending the base of the scarecrow to mirror the curve of the banner.

   
   Step 28: Die cut the haunted house and halloween word die from black classic kraft stock, sand with a sanding grip and blend in vintage photo distress ink with a mini blending tool. Blend tea dye distress ink lightly onto the heavystock banner (top one), stamp a bat and the crescent moon from the haunted house set and adhere the haunted house and beware banner, plus an adornment spider with distress collage medium matte. Paint fossilized amber distress paint inside the haunted house’s windows.

   
   Run string, twine, burlap, ribbon or chain through the mini book rings attached to the top of the banner and hang. Why not make one each year and write the year on the back or make a feature of it on your banner. A great way to practice techniques and track your creative progression.

2. Mr Pumpkinhead

   Have you met Mr Pumpkinhead? He’s a bit of a merchant… of what though, we don’t know ….and don’t dare to ask!!

   
   Thank you so much for your kind comments about this card I made for the Tim Holtz Halloween inspiration series. Here’s a step by step to show you how he was made…

   
   Step 1: Cut a piece of distress mixed media heavystock 3.25 x 5 inches. Cover with antique linen distress ink using a blending tool.
   Step 2: Blend in a little mustard seed distress ink.
   Step 3: Squish broken china distress ink onto a non stick craft sheet and spritz with water using a distress sprayer.
   Step 4: Tap the heavystock into the ink. Dry with a heat tool.

   
   Step 5: Blend a little vintage photo distress ink lightly over the background.
   Step 6: Edge with walnut stain distress ink.
   Step 7: Spray big water droplets over the background. Dry with a heat tool.
   Step 8: Tap the heavystock into the broken china droplets again if required.

   
   Step 9: Blend more vintage photo distress ink over the background.
   Step 10: Edge with more walnut stain distress ink, this time blending a little further into the center.
   Step 11: Spritz with water and immediately pat dry with kitchen roll (paper towel) to lift the ink and leave a bleached spots.
   Step 12: Stitch around the edges with a sewing machine.

   
   Step 13: Using the Tim Holtz stamp platform for exact placement, stamp the gear stamp from the dapper stamp set in potting soil archival ink.

   

   
   Step 14: Lightly swipe the edges with a black soot distress archival ink pad to give the background a kind of vignette.

   
   Step15: Stamp the hat/suit and merchant stamps from the dapper and pumpkinhead stamp sets using the Tim Holtz stamp platform, with black soot distress archival ink on mixed media heavystock.
   Step 16: Make masks for the pumpkinhead stamps by stamping onto a sheet of plain paper and fussy cutting.
   Step 17: Cover the pumpkinhead stamped image with the corresponding mask. Turn the stamp upside down overlapping the bottom of the stamp and stamp again.*
   Step 18: Move the stamp down and stamp a third time.*

   
   *The additional stamping under the pumpkinhead creates a shadow that will create a neck to sit under his suit.

   
   Step 19: Fussy cut the merchant stamped image with tonic mini scissors.
   Step 20: Blend a little antique linen distress ink over the top. Edge with potting soil archival ink.
   Step 21: Watercolour the hat and suit with faded jeans and rusty hinge distress markers using a water brush.
   Step 22: Fussy cut and edge with vintage photo distress ink.

   
   Step 23: Watercolour the pupkinhead with rusty hinge and fossilized amber distress markers.
   Step 24: Fussy cut, creating a neck to slip under the shirt and edge with vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 25: Using a distress spritzer tool, spritz gathered twigs distress marker over the pumpkinhead.
   Step 26: Adhere the pumpkinhead onto the card and mount the hat and shirt over the top and the merchant sign underneath.

   
   Step 27:  Blend vintage photo distress oxide ink into the edge of a kraft card, spritz with water to oxidize the ink and dry with a heat tool.
   Step 28: Using a sanding grip, sand metallic kraft stock and blend in vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 29: Sand the edges of classic kraft stock and blend in vintage photo distress ink.
   Step 30: Blend vintage photo distress ink into the edges of the cork.

3. Monster Mash

   I am back with a couple more samples that I made for the Tim Holtz inspiration series. If you follow Tim on facebook and instagram you may have seen the inspiration series with seasonal projects by lots of talented designers. There’s a recap each Saturday on Tim’s blog.

   Today I’m sharing a monster mash of cards made with the incredible new Stampers Anonymous Monstrous stamp set for the inspiration series. To see the rest of this monstrous conga line, check out the Monstrous Makes post on Kath Stewart’s blog.

   
   
   I used the Tim Holtz stamp platform to ensure a nice bold image. Using the label frame stamps as a base, stamp with black soot distress archival ink and fussy cut. Stamp the newsprint background stamp over the top. Blend Vintage photo distress ink into the label and spritz with water to get the distress ink to react.

   
   
   Stamp the monstrous heads with black soot distress archival ink and watercolour with distress markers. Fussy cut with tonic mini scissors and adhere with 3D foam.

   
   
   Stamp the monstrous sayings onto the bottom in black soot distress archival ink.

   
   
   For the Frankenstein card, die cut claw marks into the label, lift and ink the edges with vintage photo distress ink. For the Dracula card, die cut a cobweb and adhere over the top of the stamped label. Both using dies from the new sizzix thinlits dies by Tim Holtz.

   
   The card mounts are some of my usual favourties, kraft card base, metallic kraft stock, classic kraft stock, corregated card and cork from the idea-ology surfaces pack. All sanded with a sanding grip and blended with vintage photo distress ink. The Dracula card cork was washed with candied apple distress marker using a water brush.

4. The Undertaker & Embalmer

   I am delighted to have been asked to make some samples for the Tim Holtz inspiration series. If you follow Tim on facebook and instagram you may have seen the inspiration series with projects by lots of talented designers. There’s a recap each Saturday on Tim’s blog.

   Today I am sharing a home decor piece that I created for the inspiration series featuring these wicked sisters…

   
   I covered a burlap panel with a sheet of paper from the Halloween mini stash. Created a background wash with water and rust alcohol ink. Blended walnut stain distress oxide through a stencil and around the edges. Stitched with a sewing machine and adhered to the background.

   
   The new Halloween typography is fantastic for spelling out themed words, such as “wicked!” The Thomas F. Little Undertakers ephemera is from the new Halloween ephemera pack, torn and inked at the edges. I stained a ruler with collage medium vintage! CONFESSION: this was my first time using it and WOW! I added an adornment index clip, weathered with alcohol ink and archival ink and added a halloween clippings sticker, (addicted to these). Added a piece of twine from the halloween trimmings to give a pop of colour amidst the brown. 😉

   
   The detail on these owls from the adornments halloween set are incredible. I covered it with black soot distress paint and when almost dry, buffed off the raised portions with a soft cloth. Then added rusty hinge distress paint to the eyes using a pin. I added mushroom alcohol ink to the chain, hanging from the index clip, to take off the shine. Mushroom alcohol ink makes everything vintage, I love the stuff!

   
   I love adding these clippings stickers to my cards and projects. I admit to having stocked up on the Halloween ones and plan to use them throughout the year. I just love the layer of comedy they add and adhered mine to the witches from the paper dolls ancestors pack. Added rusty hinge distress marker to their brooms and witch hat bands.

   
   Thank you to my dear husband, who sawed through these large idea-ology gadget gears for me, which I added grit paste to the gear and once dry, went over it with rusty hinge, peeled paint and walnut stain distress crayons. I finally “stepped away from the glossy acccents” and tried collage medium matte and was very impressed, that gear is stuck down tight and the excess glue shrunk when it dried, so no glue residue around the gear!

   
   For the final touch I added some cheesecloth stained with rusty hinge distress spray to the corners of the burlap panel with collage medium matte and edged the burlap panel with rusty hinge distress paint.

6. Creative Chemistry LIVE UK Edition

   I just had the best weekend of my life!

   
   I can’t believe a week has passed since I was lucky enough to attend the Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry LIVE UK Edition workshop, held at Art from the Heart in Harrogate.

   
   The first leg of our flight was at 7am, so a 4am alarm call for us, (they don’t call it the red eye for nothing)!! It was an easy journey with enough time at Heathrow to pick up some Scottish Tablet from Fortnum and Mason and make a quick stop at Starbucks before our connecting flight to Leeds.

   
   We checked into the Crowne Plaza in Harrogate and I got a much needed early night, although like many others attending the workshop, was far too excited to sleep!

   
   It was finally time to make my way to Art from the Heart and check in for the workshop.

   
   We were given these cool lanyards to wear in class!

   
   Tim is a phenomenal teacher, I loved every minute, learnt so much and laughed lots. I was lucky enough to take the class with a long time online friend, Emma Williams. It was so great to finally her them in person and share the day.

   
   Mario Rossi, King of BTS, was of course there making things run smoothly and capturing moments from each of the workshops.

   
   These are the tags that I made in class. DO NOT adjust your screens, I did use PINK!

   
   These were my favourite technique tags and I’ve already used them to make some Halloween cards.

   
   These are the goodies we were given in class. Tim and Mario are just beyond generous.

   
   We were given necklaces for luck, which of course will now be my traveling accessory for life! We were also given these cool gusseted bags. The idea is to take time out each day and make something and put it in the bag to use later. We were also given these Tim Holtz District Market notebooks for jotting down creative ideas. I have already made good use of both.

   
   Each student received these stencils, made exclusively for the Creative Chemistry LIVE classes. We were given a binder with clear sleeves to store our technique tags and even a tote to carry it all home in. Tim and Mario think of everything.

   
   We had to get a THA Group photo with the man himself! Kaz Hall and I admin the Tim Holtz Addicts facebook group.

   
   I managed to get a silly photo with Tim and Mario (the photo bomber) Rossi! These guys are just so much fun and their energy is endless.

   
   Mario took some fun selfies after class. Love this guy!

   
   Naturally I did some shopping at Art from the Heart and they were stocked up with Tim Holtz’s new holiday line!

   
   I was still on cloud nine the next day and as the next group of lucky students began their workshop, my Husband and I visited York and did some shopping.

   
   We met up with friends and family for afternoon tea at Betty’s Tea Room. It was simply heavenly. Somewhere I would definitely go back to.

   
   And just like that our magical weekend had come to and end and it was time to make our way back to Copenhagen. We had just enough time on the way to the airport to drop in for one last hug and meet Kath Stewart and Anne Redfern.

   We had an incredible time and met so many lovely friends, old and new. There was such an incredible atmosphere surrounding the entire weekend. People traveling from all over and coming together. So much laughter, excitement, hugs and new friendships. I certainly came away with a renewed vigor for all things creative and some wonderful memories. I hope we can do it again soon.

   A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Tim Holtz, Mario Rossi and Ben from Art from the Heart for all their hard work bringing this class to the UK and making so many crafters happy.

7. Frilly & Funkie: Salvaged

9. Frilly & Funkie: Count Me In!

   It’s Wednesday and time for the funkie side of the design team to share our projects for the current challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

   The current challenge is hosted by Jenny (Pushing the Right Buttons), who has chosen the theme COUNT ME IN! …Jenny says, “Numbers are a huge part of our everyday lives so it is no surprise they are also often included in our creative ones too. For this challenge you need to use your choice of numbers to add that special ‘sum-thing’ to your vintage or shabby chic project. Make them count as part of the design, not just a last minute addition!”

   I admit that when I saw this challenge I was delighted, as I love numbers. I wanted to create a Spring home decor piece to hang on the wall.

   I started by painting a vignette house with iced spruce distress paint, with water added to dilute and create a wash and set aside to dry.

   
   The background was created with a piece of manila heavystock, cut to fit the vignette house. I die cut wildflowers from heavystock and adhered them to the background with matte collage medium. Then painted another layer of collage medium over the top. Once dry, I began adding distress crayons to the flowers, working in small areas and blending with my finger.

   
   I sanded the edges, blended in a little vintage photo distress ink and added water droplets using a distress spray bottle. To continue with the challenge theme, I added remnant rub numbers. Then adhered the panel into the vignette house with matte collage medium.

   I used the stencil numbers thinlits die set to create side panels for the vignette house from heavystock. Once die cut, I covered with a layer of matte collage medium. Once dry, I blended in distress crayons.

   Using a cotton bud with a tiny mist of water, I removed some of the crayon to create highlights. I then adhere to the side panels of the vignette house.

   I painted a vignette finial with picket fence distress paint and then added vintage photo distress ink to areas to age. I added a mini plaquette with twine, a decorative dome with a letterpress block inside which was painted with weathered wood distress paint and sanded when dry. I adhered a butterfly to the top of the letterpress and a little moss to the bottom of the dome.

   Finally I added another letterpress, which I had painted the same way as before and added some of the new paper dolls. These things are selling like hotcakes and I can see why!

   
   For the roof I added numbers cut from grunge paper using the wordplay die. I confess to hoarding grunge paper and grunge board since it was discontinued. I used walnut stain distress stain to colour the numbers. I find the stains work really well with wood and grunge board/paper.

   
   I decorated the top of the vignette with some bouqet findings, which I coloured with distress sprays. I added a ruler ribbon which I added a belt buckle to and adhered with glossy accents.

   I added corners which I rubbed gold wax onto. Just add a wall hanger to the back it’s ready to hang up for Spring.

10. Frilly & Funkie: Free to Fly

    It’s Wednesday and time for the funkie side of the design team to share our projects for the current challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog!

    The current challenge is hosted by Kathy (Kathy by design), who has chosen the theme YOU’VE GOT TO KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM …KATHY says, “I’m a huge fan of folded paper! Whether it’s a fancy fold card, a one sheet wonder, a rosette or other folded embellishment, folds equal fun! This challenge is all about using folded paper in a way that goes beyond just folding it in half. Create a vintage or shabby chic project that uses folded paper in a way that elevates the design. You can make a fancy fold card, or add folded embellishments to a card or layout. So get out those bone folders and start creasing!”

    It took me so long to decide what do to for this challenge. My usual creative enthusiasm has been rather lackluster of late. Having just moved to Denmark 10 months ago, we are now having to move out of our apartment completely while they put new floors in. So I’m packing again, and honestly, I feel really tired!

    Still, nothing like the lure of some distress oxides and a wink from my growing stash of distress crayons to get me back to my happy place.

    
    I started with those gorgeous distress oxides. I applied some to a manila tag with a mini blending tool. I spritzed with water and dried with a heat tool. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you can build layers of colour without creating “MUD!”

    
    I used the postal marks stamp from the Tim Holtz Paris to London stamp set. Inked it up with black soot archival ink and stamped randomly onto the background without using a grid block.

    
    The fold in my card is the hot air balloon. I stamped the image twice, once onto a stamped label frame and the second image I cut the balloon out. I covered with collage medium and used faded jeans distress crayon to colour the balloon. I blended in vintage photo distress ink over the top to age. Using a bone folder, I scored a line down the center of the balloon. I ran a line of glossy accents on the back, just down the line and adhered over the top of the first stamped image. I also added a flag which I concertina folded and then adhered with glossy accents.

    
    Next it was time to accessorise! I used Tim Holtz vellum ephemera which I attached with a dot of glossy accents and then stitched into place with my sewing machine. I overlaid with remnant rubs and a sticker from the new quotations metallic stickers. Once finished, I mounted onto a black cardstock.
